California League of Conservation Voters Endorses John Laird for SD 15

Political Arm of the Environmental Movement says Laird will be a Champion for Protecting Natural Resources and Public Health in Coastal District

OAKLAND, Calif. (May 11, 2010) — “Today, the California League of Conservation Voters is proud to endorse the Honorable John Laird for the 15th Senate District,” said CLCV CEO Warner Chabot. “As one of the most competitive seats in the California Senate, SD 15 is home to a significant number of voters with strong environmental values. With CLCV’s endorsement in this special election, CLCV hopes to make a significant impact for environmental champion John Laird.”

The SD 15 seat is open for a special election scheduled for June 22, with a runoff to follow on August 17. Laird is a former member of the Assembly who represented the northern section of this district (Santa Cruz and Monterey). As an Assemblyman, Laird distinguished himself as leader both in the environmental community and with his colleagues, and earned recognition with his consistent 100% score on environmental legislation in CLCV’s annual California Environmental Scorecard.

During his six years in the Assembly, Laird demonstrated both political sophistication and compassion in his efforts to protect and invest in California’s precious natural resources. As noted in CLCV’s 2008 Scorecard, Laird was “the highest-ranking voice for the environment in the inner circle of leadership, the trusted and respected chair of the Assembly Budget Committee, and a dedicated friend and mentor to environmental advocates.”

“The election of John Laird to Senate District 15 would significantly alter the composition of the California legislature to a pro-environment majority, and would give the people of California a strong leader in the Senate in support of health and environmental issues they care deeply about,” said Chabot. “On June 22, voters in Senate District 15 should cast their votes for John Laird for state Senate.”
